THE STRANDING Something caused this poor turtle to become sick.  She was floating in Bank's Channel near Wrightsville Beach, unable to dive or eat.  As if that wasn't enough, some uncaring person in a kayak attempted to tie her to his kayak and tow her home to show his family.  Turtles in this condition often don't survive the rescue, using the last bit of strength to fight for freedom.  This attempt to tow a sick turtle could have been the last straw.   Fortune shined on her then as a man on a paddle board noticed what was going on made the other person release the turtle immediately.  The paddleboarder could see how debilitated the turtle was so he pulled her onto his board and paddled her to the Coast Guard station.
I don't have the boarder's name but all of us are grateful for his efforts.
THE TREATMENT The turtle was placed first on damp towels and then in very shallow water and given fluids and antibiotics.
After two days of fluids and one force feeding this turtle has begun to eat a bit on her own.  She has a long way to go.

JULY 20
Rain is now in water and moving around a bit.  She sometimes eats and sometimes does not.  We won't let her go too long without food.  We want our patients to eat and will strongly suggest to her that she does so.
JULY 27
In the end it was too hard for Rain to hold on.  She died this morning.
