RELEASE SEPTEMBER 20, 2006
Two lucky sea turtles returned to the wild.
CAROLINA            SOUTHPORT

CAROLINA
 and Jeanie Marasco

Going up and over the beach access we drove slowly along the shore, looking for a place with the calmest surf. Both of these guys are little squirts and we didn’t want them battered and tumbling back to shore by a large wave.  Finding the perfect spot  we hopped out with our patients and held a small ceremony, invoking Mother Ocean to accept and protect these two critters. “Southport” maintained his vice grip on his towel and we literally had to pry it out of his mouth. I guess everybody needs a “blankie” at some point in their life, even a sea turtle. Our ex-intern, now Dr. Heather Chadwick, a vet, escorted him. A special visitor from Maryland, Jeanie Marasco, carried “Carolina”.

SOUTHPORT
There was no question “Southport” knew what to do, almost flying over that first wave. “Carolina” went in exactly the way we saw her most of the time at the hospital: defensive, flippers up protecting her face. After a moment she realized she was FREE, so it was flippers back and she shot through the waves.
